Our History

Founded in 1981 by Robert and Mary Elyn McNichols, CSM was initially organized to meet the need for hands-on, professional management for the nonprofit elderly housing being developed by CSM's affiliate, McNichols & Associates. The firm has steadily grown over the years, currently employing more than 1,500 people and managing more than 26 distinct retirement communities.

One of CSM's first major projects was the opening of Trolinger House in 1982, a subsidized low-income elderly apartment community located at Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, Virginia.  It was the start of many management and development projects for CSM.

In 2021, CSM celebrated its 40th anniversary!  In those four decades, our work has positively impacted the lives of countless seniors, their families, and employees.

CSM was ranked 60th on Argentum’s 2021 list of the 150 largest providers based on current U.S. data for assisted living, independent living, memory care, and continuing care retirement communities.

As we look forward to continuing our legacy of care for the next 40 years, our commitment to CSM’s original mission and guiding philosophy remains the same: ensuring the ongoing growth and success of the communities we manage.

CSM is a proud member of LeadingAge Virginia
